Acupuncture during Pregnancy

Acupuncture during Pregnancy

Preconception care and Acupuncture during Pregnancy is of special interest to me.  I attended post-graduate training with Debra Betts in 2016 on Developing Confidence in Maternity Acupuncture.

I am developing my understanding of how acupuncture provides care. This is for women during pregnancy’s first, second and third trimester. We also aim at the postnatal period.  As a result, it has been very beneficial.

Moreover, Acupuncture is an ideal form of treatment as it offers women drug-free relief for many problems. These can arise both during pregnancy and childbirth.

Conditions helped by Acupuncture Pregnancy include:

  • Miscarriage,
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Heartburn,
  • Constipation
  • Varicose veins,
  • Haemorrhoids
  • Vulval varicosities,
  • Urinary tract infections,
  • Muscular-skeletal conditions,
  • Fatigue and exhaustion,
  • Anaemia, insomnia,
  • Anxiety and depression,
  • Itching
  • Sinusitis
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Oedema
  • Breech births

Pre-Birth Acupuncture

Moreover, pre-birth acupuncture can enhance the prospects of efficient labour.  Treatments should occur in the final weeks of pregnancy, usually from 37 weeks until delivery. This prepares the women for childbirth.  It is an ideal method to help women prepare for the most efficient labour possible.

Feedback suggests that pre-birth acupuncture offers a range of positive effects beyond reducing the time spent in labour. As a result, midwives are reporting a reduced rate of medical intervention.

Improved Pain Levels During Labour

Furthermore, self-help acupressure techniques a woman’s support partner uses can make a significant difference. Pain levels experienced during labour can also improve.

The Postnatal Period

Furthermore, there are also real benefits to the use of acupuncture during the postnatal period.  It helps to aid the overall recovery. Besides, it supports the many issues that can arise after birth and helps get the body back into balance.

Mother Warming

‘Mother warming’ is a treatment provided around day four or five post-birth. This includes using moxa (a warming herb) on the abdomen.
